If the work we’re doing right now feels safe, it’s almost certainly not moving us forward.
Because our best work doesn’t feel safe. It doesn’t feel comfortable or familiar either.
Our best work forces us to stretch. It causes us to embrace the edges. It’s the kind of work that’s demanding, often risky and sometimes tricky. It’s the work that makes us feel truly alive and gives us our greatest sense of achievement. It’s also the only work that’s worthy of our time and effort.
If we feel comfortable with our work for too many days in a row, it’s a good idea to stop and take stock of what we’re doing and why we’re doing it. That feeling of comfort is often a sign that we’re coasting. It’s an indicator that we could be mistaking movement for progress. Mistaking activity for productivity.
In short: If our work feels comfortable for too long, it’s probably not moving us forward.
